The Cost of Short-Sightedness
by Sermon Recap on October 19th, 2026
At the very center of the Gospel of Mark, we find a pivotal turning point that challenges us to examine what we truly believe about Jesus and how that belief shapes the way we live. We have reached the moment when the disciples finally confess Jesus as the Christ, yet almost immediately we see how difficult it is to move from confession to genuine, costly commitment. Peter's bold declaration is followed just as quickly by a startling attempt to correct Jesus himself, revealing that knowing who Jesus is and fully trusting what he has come to do are two very different things. This tension is not just Peter's struggle, it is ours. The feeding of the four thousand is not simply a miracle of provision. It is a living parable, a visible sign pointing to something far greater. When we trace the symbolism of the twelve baskets left over from the feeding of the five thousand and the seven baskets from the feeding of the four thousand, we begin to see that Jesus is revealing Himself as the fulfillment of every promise God made to Israel and to all nations. He is the bread of life, the one through whom all peoples are blessed. The challenge for us is whether we receive His gifts with grateful but shallow hearts, or whether those gifts draw us deeper into knowing and trusting the One who gives them. Read More
