Ears, Eyes, and Understanding

What does it mean to truly see Jesus for who He is, even when we are standing right in front of Him? In Mark 8, we encounter a striking moment in the gospel story where the disciples, having just witnessed Jesus feed four thousand people from a handful of loaves and fish, find themselves anxious about having only one loaf of bread in the boat. This passage invites us to wrestle with a deeply personal question: can we be close to Jesus, receive His gifts, and still miss the point of who He is? The feeding of the four thousand is not simply a miracle of provision. It is a living parable, a visible sign pointing to something far greater. When we trace the symbolism of the twelve baskets left over from the feeding of the five thousand and the seven baskets from the feeding of the four thousand, we begin to see that Jesus is revealing Himself as the fulfillment of every promise God made to Israel and to all nations. He is the bread of life, the one through whom all peoples are blessed. The challenge for us is whether we receive His gifts with grateful but shallow hearts, or whether those gifts draw us deeper into knowing and trusting the One who gives them. Read More
