In Mark 6:14-29, we encounter one of the most sobering and raw narratives in all of Scripture. The story of John the Baptist's death at the hands of Herod Antipas pulls no punches, placing murder, manipulation, pride, and moral compromise right alongside the unfolding story of Jesus and his ministry. What makes this passage so striking is the contrast it draws between two men: one who has every earthly advantage and yet is spiritually lost, and one who appears to lose everything and yet is spiritually anchored. Herod is a man tormented by his own conscience. When reports of Jesus reach him, his first thought is that John the Baptist has risen from the dead. That reaction tells us everything. A guilty conscience cannot outrun God's truth, no matter how much power or wealth surrounds it. For us, this is a mirror worth looking into honestly. We are invited to ask ourselves whether we are intrigued by truth but resistant to the change it demands, or whether we are willing to let it do its transforming work in us. The passage ultimately calls us to a posture of humility and dependence, reminding us that the hope we have in Christ is not diminished by dark circumstances, but is in fact most clearly seen within them.  Read More

Each year, many Christians wrestle with whether or not it’s appropriate to participate in Halloween. With its historical ties to paganism and the occult, the question naturally arises: Can Christians take part with a clear conscience? In this post, I explain why I, as a follower of Christ, choose to participate in Halloween—not to celebrate darkness, but to shine light in it. While I affirm that those with a troubled conscience should abstain, I believe the modern cultural version of Halloween offers a unique opportunity to meet neighbors, build relationships, and ultimately share the gospel. Drawing from Scripture, including Paul’s example of becoming “all things to all people” (1 Corinthians 9:19–23) and Jesus’ own ministry among sinners, I argue that Christians can engage their communities on this day without compromising holiness. Whether you choose to participate or not, the goal is the same: to glorify God, exercise wisdom led by the Spirit, and live as lights that overcome the darkness.  Read More
